"Man, there's nothing good on [insert your fave streaming service here] right now," you mumble with your plate of food in front of you, watching it go cold as you're caught in an endless scroll on [insert your fave streaming service here].
You're on a mission to find the perfect show to enjoy with your meal, but frustration is building, and you can't seem to find anything.
After what feels like hours of scrolling, you give up and go back to rewatching your all-time favorite comfort show. But little did you know, what you said earlier couldn't be further from the truth, and all because of one thing.
"I don't like to read subtitles."
Babe, I say this as nicely as possible, but you have got to grow up! American television can be entertaining from time to time, do not get me wrong there, but some of the best shows are found outside of the USA.
The well-deserved hype around Netflix's Squid Game should tell you everything you need to know! And yeah, I know it came with an English dubbed version, but it seems like Netflix may have missed the mark with the translation. This poorly translated version changed the storyline and took away the real effect it was supposed to deliver.
Now, don't get me wrong, Netflix definitely plays a huge role in this. Seriously, you're a billion-dollar company, and you get translations correct? But we, as viewers, need to embrace foreign TV as it is. Hearing how a foreign TV show is supposed to sound compared to how the English dubbed version sounds really changes the whole experience.
So, I say, enough of watching English dubbed shows and take the shows for what they are. You get so many benefits like (a) hearing and feeling the real raw emotions of the show, (b) a free Rosetta Stone. I mean, come on, you're bound to learn a phrase or two, and (c) get a whole new experience.
And don't think I was gonna leave you here without suggestions after playfully scolding you for a bit. Here are my top 5 "Jaelyn Iman Approved" Netflix foreign movie/TV show suggestions.
1. The Invisible Guest

This mystery set in Spain will have your mouth on the floor like no other. This was my initial introduction to foreign films, and I'm telling you it's insane. The storytelling and plot twists definitely make this movie worth it.
2. Alice in Borderland

So imagine Squid Game and Saw had an even bigger and scarier baby. This show is too, no, not even too, three good! It also just got renewed for season 3, so make sure you check out this Japanese thriller. You'll be on the edge of your seat every episode.
3. Who Killed Sara?

Who doesn't like a Mexican thriller filled with drama, suspense, family issues, riches, and a huge mystery that keeps getting bigger by the minute? This show is so good and will have you hooked too. I literally had to catch myself from screaming at the TV damn near every episode out of shock.
4. Girl from Nowhere

I love seeing women get their revenge, and my girl Nano is going to get it every single time! This Thai thriller is so good. It can get a little graphic and questionable at times, but other than that, it's fire.
5. Control Z

Who doesn't like a good high school drama? Lies, deception, mystery, romance. I mean, come on, this Mexican drama has it all. It's almost like Pretty Little Liars, but if "A" hated the whole town.
And that concludes my list! Go out and enjoy these shows and make sure to use the English subtitles and not the closed caption for the most accurate version.
Happy watching, xo - Jaelyn <3
